Winter Activities For Kids In And Around Darien, CT
These winter months can be quite challenging for a parent… It’s cold outside, snow and ice are covering the playgrounds, and there is only so much Sesame Street you can handle. Fortunately, Darien and the surrounding towns are filled with great options to keep your little ones entertained. And as an added bonus, they may learn a thing or two.
• Maritime Aquarium- Opened in 1988 the South Norwalk Maritime Museum is chalk full of marine life for the children to explore; sharks, sea turtles, jelly fish and over 1,000 more marine animals. Make sure to also include a show at the Imax Theatre during your visit. Currently the IMAX is showing “The Deep Sea” and “Mysteries of the Great Lakes”, check the website for show times. The museum is open daily 10am-5pm seven days a week.
• Drop-Ins At Darien Library- Throughout the week there are scheduled “drop-ins” at the library in the Children’s Reading Room for all age groups with activities ranging from music classes, story time and picture book movies.
• Mornings With Mom at the Stamford Bartlett Arboretum- Held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for ages 18 months to 3 years, the arboretum welcomes kids to meet the animals, learn about plants and covers lots of activities. A wonderful hand-on experience for both parents and children alike.
• Stepping Stones- Just over the border into Norwalk, Stepping Stones is a museum where learning and fun go hand-and-hand. Exploration and discovery is the goal with hundreds of hands on exhibits and educational programs. Stepping Stones is geared toward children ages 10 and under and has four different galleries aimed at various age groups. Admission pricing is flexible depending on the amount of usage from a daily pass to a year-long membership.
• Darien Nature Center- Conveniently right outside your back door is the Darien Nature Center, a private, non-profit organization promoting awareness and appreciation for the natural world. The center provides a state-of-the-art environmental education center where children can have hands-on interactions with many different species of wild life such as a bearded dragon, snakes, iguana and lizards.
• The Little Gym- Currently open in Norwalk and Stamford (Darien will open in March, 2010) The Little Gym is the perfect place to let your children grown, learn and have healthy interaction with others in a fun, non-competitive environment. There are a range of programs that are offered from parent/children classes for the younger kids and karate and gymnastics for the older kids.
• Sports Center of Connecticut- Head up to Shelton for a unique family experience filled with a golf range, 18 hole mini-golf, laser tag, bowling, batting cages, ice rink and much more! You’ll have a day’s worth of activities under one roof.
• Darien Ice Rink- Head right down the street to 55 Old Kings Highway to the local Darien Ice Rink. Public skating sessions are held every day except Saturday so brings your kids down. There is no membership fee to attend, just a nominal public skating fee and skate rentals if needed. And if they love it, sign them up for lessons!
• Hands On Pottery -A unique studio in the heart of Darien encouraging creativity and imagination, Hands On Pottery allows kids to create their own work of art right on the spot. The studio is complete with a range of different items to paint and all the utensils you could ever need.
